About the Founder of the School of Trade

The Career of Michael A. Joyce

In 1977, Michael A. Joyce began his plumbing career in high school at the age of 16 in Nashua New Hampshire. While attending a two year, five day per week plumbing apprentice program at Nashua High School, he was also serving a working apprenticeship with HW Wells and Sons Plumbing and Heating Company after school, on weekends and during the summers.

Upon graduation he obtained the allowable hours to test for the NH Journeyman Plumbing License Exam. In 1980 at the age of 18, he successfully achieved his first of many goals in becoming a master plumber. He continued his employment with HW Wells and Sons Plumbing and Heating Company until 1982. His primary training was in the residential and commercial plumbing and heating repair industry.

He relocated to Slidell, Louisiana and immediately became licensed. Possessing two licenses at 20 years of age, he was continuing his goal to master the craft of plumbing. He worked for Owens Plumbing and Heating Company for two years focusing on plumbing systems in the residential new construction industry. This drastic regional relocation exposed him to the differences in codes and installation practices.  He was employed with several small companies in a four year period before deciding to move onto other phases of plumbing construction.

Hungry for additional knowledge of larger projects, he became employed with an affiliate company of  the large mechanical contracting firm of MCC Mechanical of Metarie, La. This huge step was the beginning of his intense training in commercial and industrial new construction. While under the excellent training of true craftsman he flourished and entered into management roles over the next four years.

In 1990, Michael relocated and became employed with the large mechanical contracting firm of Bell Corp. of Rochester, NY. He continued to progress with supervisory roles on multi-million dollar projects. He was very fortunate to have had management training with such an outstanding firm. He was relocated to North Carolina in 1993 and remained employed until 1994.

In 1993 Michael achieved yet another goal in his plumbing career by becoming a North Carolina Class 1 licensed plumbing contractor. In 1994 Michael founded his
first business as a plumbing contractor. As with most start-ups of a small business, the first year of business was very challenging and success was based on the abilities of the owner. The vast training in several areas of the plumbing industry allowed  Joyce Company, Inc. to tackle any type of plumbing project. This became the vital link between success and failure. Success prevailed and Joyce Company, Inc. became a private contracting firm for many large globally recognized firms.

In 1997 with Joyce Company, Inc. operating smoothly, Michael decided to fulfill his dream of sharing his fortunate training with others by founding his second company. Joyce Productions, Inc. was organized and operates its plumbing trade school known as the "Plumbing School of Trade"

In 2002, Michael consolidated both companies to lower the overhead of his businesses and Joyce Productions, Inc. and Joyce Company, Inc. are now a single entity. This streamline approach allows him to allocate additional finances toward his nationwide offerings.wpe72054.gif (1363250 bytes)

The humble beginnings of the Plumbing School of Trade reflected the slow growth process of Michael's plumbing career. Teaching local young adults not focused on college was his primary concern. Soon with marketing and advertising throughout the State of NC, the word spread about the text books that are the heart and soul of the Plumbing School of Trade. In 1998 Michael became certified as a Plumbing Instructor through the National Center for Construction Education and Research.

All books are written by Michael and are based on his 28 years of experience. The popularity of all his books grew into a statewide offering of plumbing seminars. Though this expansion led to the closure of a physical location of the school, it has developed into a traveling trade school offering the same intense training that began throughout North Carolina.

The expansion continues and Michael offers seminars and training programs throughout the country. In 2002, he began teaching at the United States Pentagon and for a large hospital organization in New York City. This was just a beginning of a nationwide offering to all individuals and organizations who are dedicated to training.

In December 2003, Delmar Learning converted our Blueprint Reading and Drafting manual to become the more extensive Blueprint Reading and Drafting for Plumbers. This expanded and reformatted version is now being distributed to community colleges and trade schools throughout the country.

In November of 2004, Delmar Learning published the
plumbing training book as part of a  Residential Construction Academy series for the Home Builders Institute and National Association of Home Builders. This series is offering up-to-date construction education.

Michael has received a contract from Delmar to revise one of the best selling books in the plumbing industry. Michael will be revising Plumbing Technology, Design and Installation. It will be a thorough revision to include update technological advancements in the plumbing trade. This version will become the Fourth Edition to this great book.

In 2003, Michael was elected to a four year term on the Town Council in Cary, NC and looks forward to working closely with Wake Technical Community College and the NC Public School System to strengthen their construction training offerings.

Please feel free to communicate with Michael by returning to our Home Page.

Thank you very much for your support.
Sincerely,

Michael A. Joyce
